Every February 19th, International Day Against Homophobia in Football is commemorated, a date dedicated to promoting respect, inclusion, and diversity on and off the field.
The initiative seeks to highlight the discrimination still faced by players, coaches, referees, and fans of the LGBTIQ+ community in the world of football. Although it is one of the most popular sports in the world, it has historically been a space where homophobia has manifested itself through insults, stigmatization, and forced silences.
Various sports organizations, clubs, and professional leagues carry out awareness campaigns, display symbols of support, and disseminate institutional messages to promote a safe and violence-free environment. The goal is to reinforce the idea that football should be a space for all people, without discrimination.
In recent years, federations and leagues have strengthened protocols against discrimination, promoting sanctions and educational programs aimed at eradicating homophobic behavior in stadiums and in all areas of sport.
