TC celebrates sixth edition of the Juan Pablo Duarte Chair at PUCMM

Santo Domingo. The Constitutional Court (TC) held the sixth edition of the Juan Pablo Duarte Chair: Constitutional Democracy, within the framework of the 182nd anniversary of National Independence, with the conference entitled "Sovereignty, Constitution and international law: a necessary relationship", given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Alvarez. The activity was led by magistrate Napoleon R. Estevez Lavandier, president of the TC, and included welcoming remarks from Dr. Secilio Espinal, magnificent rector of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the institution that served as the venue for the event. During his intervention, the presiding magistrate highlighted the relevance of this chair as a space for academic reflection and institutional strengthening. The profile of the speaker was presented by magistrate Jose Alejandro Ayuso, who highlighted the diplomatic and academic career of the chancellor. In his presentation, Álvarez addressed the relationship between the sovereignty of the State, the constitutional order, and international commitments, underlining the importance of harmonizing domestic law with international law in the current context.

The event, inspired by the patriot Juan Pablo Duarte, the first Dominican constitutionalist, brought together TC magistrates, judges from different jurisdictions, professors, lawyers, public officials, and university students.

About the Chair

The Juan Pablo Duarte Chair: Constitutional Democracy was created by the Constitutional Court with the aim of promoting constitutional culture among citizens. This annual space reaffirms the high court's commitment to the supremacy of the Constitution, the defense of the constitutional order, and the protection of fundamental rights. Through these academic sessions, the TC promotes legal analysis and encourages the formation of a citizenry aware of the value of the Magna Carta as a fundamental guide for the strengthening of the country's democratic institutions.
