The 43-year-old strategist was hit by a foul line during Monday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, forcing his immediate transfer to a medical center. Studies confirmed at least seven facial fractures and one in the jaw, although he will not need surgery. Less than 24 hours after the accident, Albernaz showed up again at the stadium, with visible bruises but in good spirits, determined to continue with his responsibilities. "I am in a position to work and the team plays every day. We must move forward," said the leader, who even joked about the possibility of using additional protection in the dugout. The incident occurred while he was in his usual position, near the railing, when the hit directly impacted his face. After the hit, Albernaz himself covered his face and retreated towards the tunnel before receiving medical attention. Despite the initial severity, he overcame the concussion protocol, although he was subjected to additional evaluations as a precaution. During his time at the stadium, he communicated with his family to reassure them and received support from several team players. Among them, infielder Jeremiah Jackson —author of the hit— later gave him the ball from the grand slam he hit in that same game, accompanied by an apology message. The leader followed the development of the match towards the hospital and was discharged that same night, after receiving the approval of the medical team. Although he will have to maintain a special diet while recovering, Albernaz assured he feels better and ready to continue leading an Orioles team that is going through a good moment in the season. His quick reappearance in the dugout reflects not only his commitment to the team, but also the strength with which he has faced an episode that could have had much more serious consequences.
