Santo Domingo.– The former presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Gonzalo Castillo, resumed his political activities after being away from the public scene for several years due to the legal process he faces for the Calamar Operation case. The reappearance of the former Minister of Public Works occurred during party activities and meetings with PLD leaders, marking his return to political life after almost six years of a low profile. Castillo, who was the PLD's presidential candidate in the 2020 elections, had maintained a limited public presence since he was arrested in March 2023 and subsequently sent to house arrest for his connection to the administrative corruption case known as Operation Calamar.

Following the lifting of the coercive measure that kept him under house arrest, although still retaining a travel ban and financial guarantee, the PLD leader began to reintegrate into political activities of his organization. In recent meetings, Castillo has shared with PLD leaders and members of the Political Committee, including former President Danilo Medina, reaffirming his support for the structures and candidacies of the purple party. The former official was one of the main figures of the ruling party during the 2020 presidential elections, in which he faced current President Luis Abinader.
