Santo Domingo.– President Luis Abinader reiterated this Monday that he has no intention of seeking a third presidential term, when questioned about the debates surrounding indefinite re-election in countries like El Salvador and about local speculation of a possible new re-candidacy.
“I don't want to comment on other countries,” Abinader replied when referring to the constitutional changes in other nations that have enabled indefinite consecutive re-elections.You may be interested in: President Abinader promulgates the new Penal Code
The Head of State recalled that during his administration, reforms have been promoted to limit presidential re-election, as a way to strengthen the democratic institutions of the country. Abinader, who assumed his second constitutional term on August 16, 2024, has reiterated on multiple occasions that he will not opt for a third candidacy in 2028, despite the fact that sectors of the ruling party and the opposition have speculated with that possibility."I don't know what else I have to do, because we put three locks on it and that is one of the greatest legacies I am going to leave. For me, reelection is more than enough and eight years too," the president assured.
