Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) extended the green alert to nine provinces this Monday due to possible rises in rivers, streams and ravines, as well as sudden or urban floods; the affected territories are: Santiago, San Juan, Dajabón, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Elías Piña, San José de Ocoa, Puerto Plata and Valverde.
The COE Directorate recalled that, according to the National Meteorology Institute (Indomet), this afternoon, due to the incidence of a trough in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere, combined with local effects, cloud increases will be generated accompanied by showers that will range from moderate to heavy, electrical storms, wind gusts, without ruling out possible hailstorms, especially in La Vega, Santiago, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Valverde, Puerto Plata, Montecristi, San Juan, Elías Piña, Azua and San José de Ocoa.

On the other hand, local showers and thunderstorms of lesser intensity are expected until the early hours of the night in La Altagracia, La Romana, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte, San Pedro de Macorís and Santo Domingo. The COE recommended staying in contact with the Civil Defense, the Armed Forces, the Red Cross, the National Police, the Fire Department, as well as with its own organization. Furthermore, he urged people to refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water volumes and not to use spas in the provinces under alert. "In the event of heavy rains, residents in high-risk areas who live near rivers, streams, and ravines should be vigilant and take the necessary precautions against possible flash floods and sudden flooding," said the COE. The emergency center also asked to follow the guidelines and orientations of the civil protection agencies.
