CONANI says that the death of an infant in a foster home is still under investigation

SANTO DOMINGO.– The National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI) clarified this Thursday that the case of the death of a four-month-old baby, which occurred on October 16th while under the Protection System, is still under investigation by the Public Ministry, with the aim of determining the causes and circumstances of the event.

According to preliminary investigations carried out by CONANI, the actions carried out with the girl that morning corresponded to the usual protocols and routines. However, during the process she was found unconscious, so the 9-1-1 System was immediately contacted, whose personnel confirmed her death minutes later.

The institution explained that the infant had been transferred on October 7 to the Red de Misericordia Foundation, a non-profit association (ASFL) with state subsidies and technical supervision from CONANI, following a provision from the Public Ministry, through the Prosecutor's Office for Children and Adolescents of Santiago and the Northern Regional Office of the Council. The measure was adopted after it was determined that the baby lived in risky conditions, after being irregularly returned by a maternal aunt to her mother, who has problems with addiction to narcotic substances. CONANI highlighted that the Red de Misericordia Foundation has maintained high-quality management in the care and restoration of rights of children and adolescents, offering physical, emotional, and educational support. So far this year, the entity has been supervised on three occasions, in accordance with established protocols. Furthermore, the institution emphasized its commitment to transparency, the protection of children, and collaboration with the relevant authorities to clarify the case. "CONANI reiterates its full support for the investigations carried out by the Public Ministry and expresses its solidarity with the baby's family," concludes the statement.
