DR assumes co-chairmanship of the EU-CELAC Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism on drugs

Warsaw, Poland. - The Dominican Republic assumed this Thursday the co-presidency of the EU-CELAC Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism on Drugs, for the period 2025-2026, a space whose objective is to promote a political dialogue between the regions of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union on the fight against drugs based on the principle of shared responsibility.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), the National Drug Council (CND), and the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD), valued that with this election, the country reaffirms its commitment and leadership in strengthening bi-regional EU-CELAC relations, as well as with international legislation on the fight against illicit drug trafficking and consumption and the political commitments assumed by the Dominican Government.

“Likewise, it constitutes further recognition of the efforts made by the Government of President Luis Abinader, with a view to firmly, decisively and responsibly confronting the increasing incidence of drug trafficking at the international level,” the three institutions expressed in a press release.

The Dominican Republic assumed this position during the participation of the Dominican delegation in the Annual Meeting of the Cooperation Programme between Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union on Drug Policies (COPOLAD), in the XXV High-Level Meeting of the EU-CELAC Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism on Drugs (MCCMD), held in Warsaw, Poland, from May 6 to 8, 2025, and in which high-level representatives from the 33 countries that make up CELAC and from the member states of the European Union and European institutions linked to the subject participated.

The national delegation was comprised of the Dominican Republic's ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and Mission to the European Union, Joan M. Cedano; the president of the CND, Alejandro de Jesús Abreu; the president of the DNCD, Vice Admiral (ARD), José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa; the magistrate Kenya Romero Severino, coordinating judge of the Instruction Courts of the National District; the frigate captain (ARD), Carlos Miguel Pineda Fernández, director of Intelligence Against Cyber-Drug Trafficking of the DNCD; Ellen Martínez, minister counselor; and Carla Bordas, first secretary.

The next High-Level Meeting of this Mechanism will be held in the country in the first half of 2026.
