Vehicle intercepted with undocumented Haitians; known smuggler manages to escape

San Juan. – Dominican Republic Army (ERD) personnel, along with members of the Intelligence Service (S-2), intercepted this Thursday morning a vehicle transporting four Haitian citizens in irregular migratory condition, during a follow-up operation initiated in the community of Punta Caña. The intervention occurred around 9:15 in the morning, when a white Honda CRV van, license plate G588565, presented mechanical failures at the entrance to the Corbano Norte sector. Inside the vehicle, three men and a woman of Haitian nationality were arrested, who did not carry documents proving their legal status in the country. However, at least six other foreigners who were also traveling in the unit managed to escape, as did the driver, identified as Adonis Ramírez Otaño, identified by the authorities as a renowned human smuggler.

According to the military report, the link of Ramírez Otaño was confirmed after a cell phone was found in the vehicle, whose screen showed his photograph. In addition, it is presumed that he operates in complicity with another individual known only by the alias "Bolo". The authorities recalled that Ramírez Otaño, holder of ID C-012-0126006-2, has an extensive criminal record for similar offenses. On August 8th, he was arrested in similar circumstances, when he was transporting undocumented immigrants on a motorcycle, but was released in less than 48 hours despite accumulating multiple prior records for the same practice.
