Guyana's ruling party wins a landslide election victory, according to partial data

Georgetown.- The ruling People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), of President Irfaan Ali, is heading for a landslide victory in the general elections, according to the results of the tally sheets published by the Electoral Commission. The PPP/C would secure a second term, after winning eight of the ten electoral districts with 242,498 votes, according to the summary of results made this Wednesday by the Department of Public Information.

These data are based on the scrutiny records from the different regions, but the Electoral Commission has not yet made an official announcement of the results of the elections, held last Monday. It was planned that the announcement would be this Thursday, but it may be delayed since the Commission accepted a request from the opposition Alliance for National Unity (APNU) for the recount of the votes cast in a sub-district of Region Four. In this region, according to the available data, the PPP/C made history by obtaining the most votes for the first time in that traditional APNU electoral stronghold. The PPP/C has taken the lead in the regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Eight and Nine, while the newly created We Invest in the Nation (WIN) snatched Regions Seven and Ten from APNU, with 109,066 votes. WIN was created just three months ago by businessman Azurddin Mohamed, who is sanctioned by the United States for corruption but has achieved great popularity.

The big loser in the elections is APNU, a coalition of six parties led by veteran Aubrey Norton, who would cease to be the largest opposition force to cede this position to the WIN.

With the available data, Ali is running for a second term, but the president has not yet spoken, awaiting the final result to be announced by the Electoral Commission. Several groups of international observers praised Guyana this Wednesday for a peaceful and smooth electoral process, but regretted the unequal conditions between political parties and the lack of clear campaign finance regulations.
