Miami (USA). - Several helicopters from United States Special Operations conducted training exercises in recent days in waters near Venezuela, amid an increase in tension between both nations due to the US deployment in the Caribbean, as reported this Thursday by The Washinton Post.
The MH-6 Little Bird and MH-60 Black Hawk attack helicopters flew in early October less than 145 kilometers from the Venezuelan coast, near oil and gas platforms, according to images analyzed by the aforementioned media. You may be interested in: U.S. attacks another ship off the coast of Venezuela
A U.S. official reported, under condition of anonymity, that the aircraft were conducting training flights in the region, and denied that they were related to a possible U.S. military operation in Venezuela. The deployment of helicopters in the region joins that of other combat forces such as ships and aircraft with which the United States says it wants to combat drug trafficking. Furthermore, US President Donald Trump authorized covert CIA operations in Venezuela. Trump declared this Wednesday that he is studying the possibility of carrying out attacks against drug trafficking in Venezuelan territory after sinking several alleged drug traffickers' boats at sea. Attacks against five vessels - which Washington claims were transporting drugs - on international waters near Venezuela, have cost the lives of approximately thirty people. The Trump administration accuses Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of leading the Cartel of the Suns, something the Caracas government rejects and denounces a campaign of intimidation by the United States.
