Yorkis Carvajal wins bronze in wrestling; Liranyi Alonzo advances to the athletics final at Panam Junior 2025

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay. The Dominican Republic added its fifth medal in the II Junior Pan American Games this Wednesday, thanks to wrestler Yorkis Carvajal Lerbours, who won the bronze in the 60-kilo Greco-Roman style division, while sprinter Liranyi Alonzo advanced to the 200-meter final, reaffirming her status as a promising athlete from Quisqueya.

Carvajal defeated Peruvian Abel Sánchez 9-5 in the bronze medal match, achieving third place with an overall score of 3-1.

"The key to this victory was not giving up after taking the lead, although I was exhausted at the end, I tried not to show it and resisted until the end," said the Dominican medalist.

The athlete had fallen in his first match 1-3 against the Mexican Ángel Segura. With this result, Dominican wrestling achieved a medal among the five representatives who took to the mat that day. In other results, Starlin Laguerre Laurens was defeated 1-5 by Cuban Joenni Gómez in the 77 kg Greco-Roman; José Núñez Encarnación lost the bronze medal match in the 130 kg category against Brazilian Wesley Barros; while Luis Figuereo Suero (87 kg) and Elvis Balbuena Bueno (97 kg) were eliminated. With Carvajal's award, the country accumulates two silver and three bronze medals in the youth continental event.

Athletics: Liranyi Alonzo shines in qualifiers

Dominican sprinter Liranyi Alonzo achieved the best time in the 200-meter dash qualifiers, stopping the clock at 23.33 seconds, securing her spot in the final, which will be run this Thursday at 6:10 p.m. (5:10 p.m. Dominican Republic time). Alonzo had already climbed the podium with the silver in the 100-meter dash and will now seek another medal for the Dominican delegation. In the same test, Laura Martínez (Colombia, 23.61), Lanica Locker (Antigua and Barbuda, 23.64), and Alliah Baker (Jamaica, 24.23) also qualified. In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Micheiry Brito Espinal finished sixth with a time of 1:00.79. In the men's division, Yeral Núñez finished fourth (50.13).

Other sports

  • Water Skiing: Andrea Pigozzi finished sixth in the slalom final and fifth in jumping, while in figures, Andrea (200 pts.) and Paolo Pigozzi (3,310 pts.) were out of the final.
  • Weightlifting: Jhancelis Santana was sixth in the 53 kg (151 kg total). Enmanuel Pascual finished eighth in the 71 kg (197 kg).
  • Canoeing: Cristal Díaz took seventh place in K1 200 m (1:05.98).
  • Triathlon: Víctor Félix finished in 25th position with a time of 1:02.00.

The Dominican delegation will continue in action this Thursday with medal options in athletics and wrestling, keeping alive the hope of expanding the medal table in the final stretch of the Games.
