April 18: International Day for Monuments and Sites

Santo Domingo.- Every April 18th, International Day for Monuments and Sites is celebrated worldwide, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting our invaluable cultural heritage. This date, proclaimed by UNESCO in 1983, aims to raise awareness among the population about the richness and diversity of historical monuments and archaeological sites that make up the cultural identity of each country. Each year, International Day for Monuments and Sites highlights a specific theme that reflects the challenges and opportunities in heritage conservation. On this occasion, under the slogan "Protecting our shared heritage", a call is made for international cooperation and the commitment of local communities in the safeguarding of monuments and sites that are part of our common cultural heritage. During this day, a wide range of activities are carried out worldwide, including guided tours of historical monuments, conferences, exhibitions, educational workshops, and public awareness campaigns. These initiatives seek to foster intercultural dialogue, promote the sustainable conservation of heritage, and highlight the importance of collective memory in building a more inclusive and equitable future.
