Every July 17th, International Tattoo Day is celebrated, a date dedicated to recognizing one of the oldest and most personal forms of human expression: body art. This day honors the work of ink artists and highlights the cultural, historical, and emotional diversity that marking the skin entails.
The oldest records date back more than 5,000 years, such as the case of the ice man “Ötzi”, whose remains show engravings on his body. Over time, different civilizations have used these marks for ritual, spiritual, social or therapeutic purposes. In many towns, they symbolized the passage to adulthood, achievements, struggles or hierarchies. Currently, this art has become a creative manifestation widely accepted worldwide. More than 40% of young adults globally have at least one permanent design, and in Latin America, the figure continues to rise. In the Dominican Republic, more and more people are choosing to put personal symbols, meaningful phrases, or portraits on their skin. The cost of these works varies depending on the size, level of detail, and experience of the artist, with prices ranging from RD$2,000 to over RD$30,000 for more complex pieces. The International Tattoo Day also promotes the professionalization of the sector. Emphasis is placed on the importance of hygiene, the use of safe materials, and the constant training of specialists. With the advancement of technology and the talent of the creators, this art has reached surprising levels of realism, color, and precision. Body art studies around the world commemorate this date with activities open to the public, exhibitions, special sessions, and educational talks. It is an opportunity to connect with those who choose to carry their history, their emotions, or their identity written on their skin. Each design is a unique symbol that accompanies the wearer for the rest of their life.International Tattoo Day: An art that transcends the skin
