Providence, Rhode Island, USA — At least two people died and several more were injured in a shooting that occurred in the Brown University area, an agent reported, while the school, one of the most prestigious in the United States, issued an active shooter alert and urged students and staff to take shelter during the second day of final exams.
So far, police have not provided details on the number of victims, their conditions, or the circumstances of the shooting. The officer who provided the figure of at least two dead could not publicly mention the details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
University authorities initially told students and staff that a suspect had been apprehended, before reporting that this was not the case and that the police were still searching for one or more suspects, according to alerts issued through the university's emergency notification system.

"We are still gathering information about what happened, but we are telling people to lock their doors and remain alert," said Providence City Councilman John Goncalves, whose district includes the Brown campus. "As a Brown alumnus, as someone who loves the Brown community and represents this area, my heart is broken. My heart goes out to all the families and people who have been affected."
The shooting was reported near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story structure that houses the School of Engineering and the Department of Physics, according to the school's website. It includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms, and offices.
The engineering design exams were underway in the building when the shooting occurred.
President Donald Trump said late in the afternoon that he had been informed about the shooting
"God bless the victims and the victims' families!" he said on his social network.
Students were instructed to shelter in place while police responded to the situation, and the public was told to avoid the area. A police officer warned members of the media to take shelter in vehicles because the area was still an active scene.
Authorities warned that the information was still preliminary as investigators worked to determine what happened.
Police were actively investigating and still gathering information from the scene, said Kristy DosReis, public information chief for the city of Providence. The FBI reported that it is already collaborating in the response.
The school is a private non-profit institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and just over 3,000 graduate students, according to its website. Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
