At least two dead and three missing after a bridge collapse in eastern China

Beijing.- At least two people died and three others are still missing after the collapse of a bridge under construction in the Chinese city of Yancheng, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, local authorities reported early Tuesday. The collapsed infrastructure was located in Xiangshui County, north of the municipality, according to local government sources cited by the Xinhua news agency. After the accident, emergency teams immediately deployed a rescue operation and several people who had fallen into the water were assisted, although the authorities did not specify their number. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, the official sources added.

The event adds to other recent episodes in the Asian country, including the one that occurred in July 2024, when the partial collapse of a highway bridge in the central province of Shaanxi, caused by the sudden rise of a river, left 38 dead and 24 missing. Also, in the summer of the previous year, torrential rains and floods associated with Typhoon Doksuri caused the collapse of part of a bridge in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, which caused several vehicles to fall into the water.
