COE discontinues green alert in communities of Barahona and Bahoruco after concluding work on Monte Grande dam

Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported this Thursday that the green alert level was discontinued for several communities in the provinces of Barahona and Bahoruco, after the completion of the work carried out on the gates of the Monte Grande dam. The preventive measure had been adopted due to the risk of rising rivers and streams during the repair work and operational tests of the reservoir. However, the COE explained that the alert was lifted because the dam gates have already been closed, which eliminates the immediate danger to the downstream localities. In Barahona province, the communities that had been placed under alert were Las Minas, Quita Coraza, El Higuito, Fondo Negro, Habanero, Arroyo Grande, Los Conuquitos, Pescadería, Vicente Noble, Uvilla, Canoa, Mena Arriba, Jaquimeyes, Mena Abajo, Palo Alto, El Peñón, Fundación and Los Robles. While in Bahoruco province, the alert included the areas of San Ramón and Tamayo.

The COE indicated that the provision sought to prevent regrettable events and protect the population from possible rural floods derived from technical maneuvers at the dam, information that was communicated in a timely manner through its official channels. The Monte Grande dam, located between the provinces of Azua and Barahona, is one of the main hydraulic infrastructures in the south of the country and supplies water to dozens of communities in the region. The reservoir was inaugurated on January 25, after a prolonged construction process that began more than 14 years ago and was reactivated in 2008. The authorities reiterated that permanent monitoring of the infrastructure and hydrological conditions of the area is maintained, in order to guarantee the safety of nearby communities.
