The CEO of Banco de Reservas, Dr. Leonardo Aguilera, stated that the financial institution maintains a firm commitment to the Punta Bergantín project and national tourism, with more than 7,000 financed rooms and a credit portfolio that registers impressive growth, increasing from RD$22,000 million to more than RD$50,000 million currently.
Aguilera made the statement while speaking at the first groundbreaking of the Meliá Bergantín Beach hotel, in Punta Bergantín, an activity headed by President Luis Abinader. The banking executive said that the Bank's credit portfolio in the tourism sector represents 44% of the entire national financial system.
"Currently, 22 new projects are being evaluated for more than RD$115,000 million, which would add 10,100 rooms; two convention centers; a cruise port; and a theme park," he specified.
He added that these projects are distributed in destinations such as Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, La Romana, Santo Domingo, Miches, Pedernales and Montecristi.
In addition to financing those investments, Banreservas also supports three new cruise ports, which are Taino Bay, Port Cabo Rojo and the future Port Samaná; while participating in the development of the El Dorado Water Park theme park, works that have generated more than 16,000 jobs.
He said that the Punta Bergantín tourism project was initiated as a commitment aligned with President Luis Abinader's vision of promoting tourism as a key engine of national development.
This project emphasized "was born as an alliance between the Dominican Government and Banreservas, with the aim of strengthening Puerto Plata as a tourist destination and establishing a model of sustainable development".
The Punta Bergantín project has more than 9.5 million square meters and will include about 4,000 hotel rooms; 4,000 residential units; a 27-hole golf course; beach clubs, shopping centers, recreational and innovation areas.
This complex, which will have a modern, sustainable design that respects the natural environment, has already caught the attention of major international brands, such as Westin and Meliá, which will add nearly a thousand rooms and more than 220 million dollars in investment.
Aguilera highlighted President Luis Abinader's vision of "betting on tourism, even in difficult times, and the extraordinary management of Minister David Collado," which today consolidates the Dominican Republic as a leading destination in the region.
