Six murders reported in a violent weekend in Puerto Rico

San Juan.- The Puerto Rico Police reported this Sunday that six murders occurred during this weekend in the Caribbean archipelago. According to the statement released by the authorities, the first murder was recorded on Friday in the municipality of Juana Díaz, located in the south of Puerto Rico, at around 1:49 in the morning, the shooting death of Joseph Rafael Torres, 23 years old, was reported. The second homicide occurred in Yauco, another municipality in the south, at around 2:57 a.m. on Friday when a call alerted the agents of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, the uniformed officers found the shot body of a man inside a vehicle, identified as Luis A. Zayas, 21 years old. He had a criminal record for violation of the Controlled Substances Act. The third murder happened in the Laguna neighborhood in the town of Aguada, in the west of the archipelago, when a man identified as Nelson Acevedo, 56 years old, was about to leave his residence after hearing noises from outside and was shot.

Upon hearing the gunshots, his son identified as Nelson Acevedo, 18 years old, left the residence to assist his father, was seriously wounded by a gunshot, and was transported to a hospital in the region to receive medical attention. The fourth homicide was also on Friday when shots were reported through the 9-1-1 Emergency System in the municipality of Barceloneta. Upon the arrival of the agents at the scene, they found a man on the pavement with several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body, which caused his death on the spot. This man was identified as Joseph Serrano, 26 years old, a resident of the town of Florida. The fifth murder was on Saturday when officers received an alert about a person shot on the stairs of Residencial Brisas de Cupey, in San Juan. When the uniformed officers arrived, they found a man with several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body that caused his death on the spot. The deceased was identified as Yasiel Amil Vázquez, 20 years old. Finally, the Police reported the sixth murder that occurred in the parking lot of the Ralph’s supermarket, located on PR-31 road, in the urban area of the municipality of Naguabo, in eastern Puerto Rico. According to the authorities, Eric Alberto Delgado, 34 years old, died inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds in different parts of the body. Most murders in Puerto Rico are related to settling scores between criminal groups and linked to drug trafficking.
