Univision, the largest Hispanic television channel in the United States, announced this Wednesday that it will return to broadcast on YouTube TV after a multi-year agreement and a political pressure campaign, which even aroused the support of the American president, Donald Trump.
The agreement comes almost two months after YouTube TV canceled Univision's Spanish-language channels on September 30, when the contract for the distribution of its content expired. In response, the television station launched the campaign 'Do the Right Thing, Google' to denounce the "discriminatory" plan to remove Univision from the main YouTube TV package and charge an additional 18%, $15 more, to maintain access to the basic English channels. You can also read: Lula says Bolsonaro's conviction "is a lesson in democracy for the world"
The agreement contemplates broadcasting TelevisaUnivision's channels: Univision, UNIMÁS, TUDN, and Galavisión, in the basic and Spanish plans of YouTube TV in the United States, in addition to including ViX in the 'Primetime Channels' package, which will be expanded to Mexico for the first time, according to a statement from the Latin company. "We are pleased to have reached an agreement that restores Univision to YouTube TV, ensuring that millions of Hispanics can access the news, sports, and entertainment they care about and have depended on for over 70 years," said Daniel Alegre, CEO of TelevisaUnivision. Alegre thanked the support of politicians, lawmakers and Trump, who considered that Univision's withdrawal from the YouTube TV package "is very bad for Republicans" in the upcoming midterm elections. "They were very nice to me with their special, highest-rated political show, and I set a Republican record in the Hispanic vote. Google, for justice, please let Univision come back!", the president urged on October 4th on TruthSocial. The additional charge to Hispanic channels would affect about 10 million subscribers, according to Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio, in a letter he sent to Google CEO Sundar Pichai in October. The new alliance between TelevisaUnivision and YouTube will now allow for new initiatives to reach a "wider audience," the television station asserted. "This agreement recognizes the essential role that our content plays in the daily lives of our viewers, while we achieve our mission of reflecting the voice of Hispanics," concluded Alegre.
