Berlin.- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this Sunday in Vilnius that the document on security guarantees from the United States is one hundred percent ready for signature, while also alluding to the importance of European guarantees and Ukraine's access to the European Union (EU), for which he set 2027 as the date.
"For us, the security guarantee is, above all, a bilateral security guarantee from the United States. The document is one hundred percent ready. We are waiting for our partners to be ready, the date and the place for the signing," said Zelenskyy in a joint press conference with his Lithuanian and Polish counterparts, Gitanas Nauseda and Karol Nawrocki.
He added that the document will then be sent for ratification to the U.S. Congress and the Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament.
Accession to Europe
"The second guarantees for Ukraine are European security guarantees, the 'coalition of volunteers' and, most importantly, accession to the European Union. These are guarantees of economic security for Ukraine," he pointed out.
Zelensky expressed his conviction that Ukraine will be prepared in terms of opening all clusters in the first half of 2026, and in 2027 it will be fully prepared for accession "at a technical level".
«We want a specific date (of accession to the EU) in our agreement on the end of the war, so that all parties then adhere to these agreements, including the aggressor, who will sign a 20-point plan, if the time comes, so that no one can block us later,» he added, quoted by Ukrainian agencies.
«Ensuring stability, security, and prosperity»
For his part, Nauseda emphasized that Lithuania aspires for Ukraine to become a member of the EU before 2030.
«This would be a decisive step to ensure long-term stability, security and prosperity, not only in Ukraine, but throughout the region. This is a strategic interest for Lithuania, on which we want to continue focusing during our presidency of the EU Council in 2027», he assured.
Nawrocki: Ukraine is heading towards "Western civilization"
Nawrocki, for his part, did not want to give a forecast on the date of Ukraine's accession to the EU, although he stressed that if one speaks from a strategic point of view, "Ukraine's path is directed towards Western civilization, and not towards the Eastern one."
«Zelensky says 2027, President Nauseda says 2030. I would not like to contribute my forecast to this debate, because the accession process requires, first of all, balance and, on the other hand, the Poles know for themselves how long it takes to join the European Union», he said.
Lublin Triangle
Zelensky, Nauseda, and Nawrocki had previously met in the so-called Lublin Triangle format, in which the three presidents discussed the energy situation in Ukraine and the needs in terms of air defense.
Previously, Zelensky and Nawrocki held, respectively, a bilateral meeting with Nauseda, after which the presidents participated in the commemorative events of the 163rd anniversary of the January Uprising against the Russian Empire.
