Abinader's meeting with former presidents on the Haitian crisis will be Wednesday the 14th at the Ministry of Defense

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader will meet with former presidents Hipólito Mejía, Leonel Fernández, and Danilo Medina next Wednesday, May 14, at the Ministry of Defense (MIDE), to address the Haitian migration crisis affecting the Dominican Republic.

In a statement from the Presidency, it is indicated that the former presidents have confirmed their participation. In the particular case of former presidents Fernández and Medina, they explain that they welcomed the place proposed by the president, after the opposition presented to the meeting being held at the National Palace.

The meeting will be held next Wednesday, May 14th, at 4:00 PM, with a focus on national security in the face of growing instability in Haiti.

It is recalled that President Abinader formally convened the former presidents through individually addressed letters, highlighting the urgency of the Haitian situation and its impact on national stability. In the letters, the president emphasized the need to act with a vision of State, valuing the trajectory, experience, and leadership of the former presidents as fundamental elements to define a firm and unified national stance in the face of an unprecedented crisis.

This meeting represents a gesture of historical responsibility, which strengthens democratic institutionality and the capacity of the Dominican State to act with unity, maturity, and a vision for the future in the face of the challenges posed by the Haitian crisis.

President Abinader also agreed to continue the dialogue process through individual visits to former presidents to hold bilateral meetings after this first meeting. Likewise, he welcomed the suggestion to involve the Economic and Social Council (CES) in this process, with the aim of broadening participation and ensuring a multi-sectoral approach that contributes to the strengthening of consensual decisions for the benefit of the country.
