In Argentina: 510 million pesos were transferred to a woman by mistake

Argentina.- Verónica Alejandra Acosta, a resident of San Luis, mistakenly received a transfer of $510 million in her bank account, due to an administrative error by the provincial government.

Acosta expected child support of $8,000 when, surprisingly, the money appeared in his account. "I found this money and with so much need, I went shopping and helped my family. I thought it was a gift from God," he recounted in public statements.

Without knowing the real origin of the funds, the woman made expenses on construction materials, food, appliances, and a 2014 Ford Ka model car.

According to the Mendoza Post, the purchases include a refrigerator, a fryer, a microwave, floor tiles, a toilet tank, and two televisions (one of them given as a gift to a sister-in-law). In addition, he made 66 transfers of up to $500,000 each to different family members.

It was later revealed that the amount was mistakenly transferred by an accountant of the Government of San Luis, who misplaced the account number. After the error was known, the authorities froze Acosta's bank account.

Her lawyer stated that his client was never officially notified of the error and that she found out about the situation just as the police arrived at her home.

Argentine justice ordered the raid of Acosta's home, where they seized the cell phones of her children. In addition, five other people related to the woman were also charged and a bail of $30 million was imposed on each of them to avoid preventive detention.

Acosta maintains that he did not act in bad faith and that some of the assets have already been returned voluntarily. “We never knew it was government money. Now they treat us like criminals, but the error was not ours,” he said.
