Passenger who flew from Thailand with a suitcase full of snakes detained in India

Bangkok, June 2 (EFE) - Security agents at Mumbai International Airport detained a man who flew from Thailand with a suitcase loaded with snakes, an unusual type of smuggling that is being investigated by authorities in India.

The Bombay customs office reported the discovery at 22:05 (GMT+5:30) local time on Sunday via X, where it also published photographs of the seized animals, including 44 Indonesian pit vipers, a blue and lightweight species.

Inside the passenger's suitcase, which arrived from Thailand as checked baggage, there were also three spider-tailed horned vipers, native to Iran, and five Asian leaf turtles.

The customs office report does not delve into details about the case, so information such as the passenger's age, the city from which they took the flight in Thailand, or the charges they face in India is unknown.

Airport officials don't usually come across this type of contraband in Bombay, where they generally compute cases of people detained for drug trafficking.

The last finding of hidden animals in this airport was recorded on February 4th, when security agents found five siamang gibbons, a primate native to Southeast Asia, practically newborns.
