Chamber of Deputies advances study of School Nutrition project

Santo Domingo.- In order to advance the study promoted by the School Nutrition Law project, the special commission of the Chamber of Deputies studying this initiative met with representatives of the National Institute of Student Welfare (INABIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the Dominican Republic.

Congresswoman María de los Ángeles, who chairs the commission, stated that the participation of these guests was expected to broaden knowledge and strengthen the work the country requires regarding this initiative.

In addition, he emphasized that the goal is to create a law that provides a collective benefit to the children in the Dominican educational sector.

Víctor Castro, the executive director of INABIE, pointed out that this legislation seeks to ensure that food is prepared within the educational centers and highlighted that 95% of the companies that supply the institution are MSMEs, of which 55% are led by women, representing a great opportunity for the economic development of this sector.

He also stressed the importance of establishing this program as a State commitment, so that no government can eliminate this benefit for Dominican families.

The FAO representative in the Dominican Republic, Rodrigo Castañeda, emphasized that the proposal is based on two fundamental pillars: governance, which guarantees the continuity of the school nutrition program through institutionalization, and child health, promoting the intake of healthy foods and avoiding ultra-processed products.
