Abinader calls for national dialogue in the face of Haitian crisis in CES session: "We are united by a duty that brooks no delay"

Santo Domingo. — President Luis Abinader led an extraordinary session of the Economic and Social Council (CES) this Thursday, where he raised the need for a national response to the effects of the Haitian crisis on the Dominican Republic.

Accompanied by former presidents Leonel Fernández, Hipólito Mejía and Danilo Medina, as well as representatives of the three branches of government and various social sectors, Abinader warned about the risks posed by the institutional collapse of Haiti, especially in terms of migration, security, and trade.

“La frontera no es donde termina la República Dominicana. Es donde comienza”, afirmó el mandatario, al defender el desarrollo de las comunidades fronterizas como estrategia de estabilidad y control territorial.

Among the priority issues identified are the modernization of the immigration system, the regulation of bilateral trade, the fight against smuggling, and national security against possible transnational threats. The president also urged greater participation from the international community in the institutional and economic reconstruction of Haiti, and proposed a comprehensive approach that combines vigilance, social investment, and respect for the law.

Over the next few days, the CES will debate concrete proposals in search of consensus to address the crisis from a national and sustainable approach.
