Half of Cuba will be without power this Sunday due to strong blackouts

The main cause is the lack of fuel and the increase in consumption due to the summer heat.

This Sunday, more than half of Cuba will suffer blackouts at the same time, especially in the afternoon and evening, when electricity consumption is highest, according to the state-owned Unión Eléctrica (UNE). Yesterday, a record of impact was reached, with almost 2,000 megawatts of deficit, which left 55% of the country without electricity. In some areas of the country, power outages last up to 20 hours a day, and in Havana they are usually four to six hours a day, even in the early morning. For this Sunday, demand is expected to far exceed generation capacity and they will only be able to produce about 1,917 MW, but demand will reach 3,600 MW, which will cause long power outages throughout the day.

These blackouts are due to the fact that most power plants are over 40 years old, are in poor condition, and more than 100 engines that help generate electricity are not working due to lack of diesel or fuel oil. The Cuban government has admitted that it does not have enough foreign currency to buy the necessary fuel. The UNE reported that they will try to add some generating plants and repair engines that are out of service, but even so, they will not be able to meet the demand.
