Santo Domingo.– The deputy of the Peravia province for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Luis Báez, denounced this Friday from the National Congress the alleged inoperability of the National Police in the face of the alarming increase in robberies and thefts in the area, as well as acts of corruption committed by members of the Criminal Investigations Department (DICRIM) and other police units in Baní and surrounding communities.

Báez asserted that in the last three weeks a "great wave of robberies and hold-ups" has been unleashed in the province, while the Police "say nothing" and remain on the sidelines of the situation.

“The truth is that the amount of complaints I am receiving daily about acts of corruption carried out by agents of the National Police in Peravia is incredible,” expressed the legislator.

The congressman directly pointed to the DICRIM of Baní for alleged acts of extortion, citing a recent case in which a young man was forced to pay 20,000 pesos to avoid being arrested, without apparent justification. "Then they went and gave the money back, and the only thing they did was transfer the agents, without any disciplinary action," he criticized. Báez also lashed out at the checkpoints installed by a unit called CIUTRAN in communities such as Sombrero and El Llano, which he described as "points of blackmail and corruption". "Citizens are already fed up with being stopped at checkpoints and being looted by the very people who should be protecting them. Meanwhile, criminals are running rampant like a vein in Baní, out of control," he denounced. The legislator urged the director of the National Police to pay urgent attention to the situation in the province of Peravia. "The Police are not doing their job. Let the director keep an eye on Baní, because the citizenry can't take it anymore. Serious citizens are being persecuted while crime is getting stronger," he concluded.
