This Friday starts with downpours from dawn in a large part of the country

Santo Domingo. - The early hours of this Friday, various showers in a large part of the country welcomed this day, as a result of a trough and a tropical wave affecting Dominican territory.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) reported that the active tropical wave with high cyclonic potential has moved west, located between Haiti and the Windward Passage, the air mass covering us remains with considerable humidity and instability.

Consequently, cloudy increases, scattered moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts will continue to occur in sectors of La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Plata, Gran Santo Domingo, Peravia, San Cristóbal, Azua, San Jose Ocoa, San Juan, Barahona, and Pedernales. During the afternoon, the rains will extend to Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Monte Plata, Samaná, and María Trinidad Sánchez, and will persist during the first hours of the night, and then gradually disappear the mentioned activity.

On Saturday, we expect the cloud cover to move in from the Caribbean Sea, generating scattered showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts in the provinces of Pedernales, Barahona, Azua, Peravia, San Cristóbal, Greater Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, and La Altagracia. As the day progresses, these conditions will gradually extend inland. In the afternoon, storm activity will increase, and moderate to heavy showers are forecast to mainly affect La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, and Samaná.

Cyclonic activity in the Atlantic basin, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico:

Gabrielle is now a post-tropical cyclone, located about 230 kilometers west of the Azores. It is moving east at about 46 km/h. Its maximum sustained winds are about 100 km/h with stronger gusts around it. It poses no danger to the Dominican Republic.

Humberto is now a category 1 hurricane, located 750 km east/northeast of the Leeward Islands, Lesser Antilles and has maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h with higher gusts. It is moving northwest at 6 km/h. It does not pose a threat to the Dominican Republic.

We are also monitoring an active tropical wave located over the area between Haiti and the Windward Passage, which has an 80% chance of cyclonic development over the next 2 days, and a 90% chance within 7 days. Due to its geographical position, we are continuously monitoring this meteorological system.
