Brasilia.- Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro began serving on Tuesday the 27-year prison sentence imposed on him for attempted coup in a small twelve-square-meter room at the headquarters of the Federal Police in Brasilia.

The far-right leader, who was under house arrest for violating various precautionary measures imposed in the context of the process, had already been transferred to that room at the Federal Police headquarters last Saturday, after attempting to damage an electronic ankle bracelet that was part of those restrictions. This Tuesday, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the trial that took place in the First Chamber of the Supreme Court, determined the end of the process after considering that the possibilities of appeals have been exhausted. In that decision, it was also established that the former president (2019-2022) begin to serve the sentence of 27 years and three months in prison in that same room and that the inmate be guaranteed proper medical attention. Bolsonaro, 70 years old, has various health problems and attributed his intention to damage the electronic ankle bracelet with a homemade welder to some antidepressant medications that allegedly caused him "hallucinations". The far-right leader attributes his fragile state of health to the after-effects of a stabbing that a mentally ill person inflicted on him in the abdominal region in the midst of the electoral campaign for the 2018 elections, in which he was elected president. Four years later, in October 2022, when he was seeking re-election, he was defeated at the polls by the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and according to the Supreme Court, he hatched a conspiracy after his defeat with the aim of preventing the inauguration of his successor and remaining in power.
