Tomás Hernández Alberto backs Abinader: RD–US agreement against drug trafficking does not violate national sovereignty

Santo Domingo.- The president of the Poder P’AL Pueblo movement, Tomás Hernández Alberto, today expressed his firm and public support for President Luis Abinader, in the face of unfounded criticism from some opposition sectors, that the cooperation agreements with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking violate national sovereignty.

Hernández Alberto described these statements as irresponsible politicization of a national security issue, recalling that at no time has President Abinader compromised the independence, territorial control, or sovereign decisions of the Dominican Republic.

"To say that these agreements violate sovereignty is simply false. The Dominican Republic maintains absolute control over its airports, its territory, and all strategic decisions. President Luis Abinader has acted with responsibility, transparency, and absolute respect for the Constitution," said the leader of the Poder P'AL Pueblo movement.

The leader pointed out that drug trafficking is a global threat and that real cooperation between allied countries is required to combat it effectively. "The security of the Dominican people is above political interests. These agreements do not surrender sovereignty; they strengthen the State's capacity to confront an evil that respects no borders," he added.

Hernández Alberto recalled that the Dominican Republic and the United States maintain a historical collaboration on security issues, a cooperation that has allowed significant advances in seizures, joint operations, and air and maritime surveillance. "Today what President Abinader is doing is continuing that traditional cooperation, but with greater firmness and a better strategy," he pointed out.

He also highlighted that those who attack these agreements are unaware of or choose to ignore the impact of drug trafficking in the region, especially when many of the cartels operate from countries governed by dictatorial regimes that facilitate these criminal networks.

"President Abinader not only protects sovereignty; he protects the life, tranquility, and future of Dominican families. Poder P'AL Pueblo fully supports his determination and rejects the malicious criticisms that seek to confuse the population," he concluded.
