Lawmakers support Congressional reviews of US attacks on ships in the Caribbean

Lawmakers from both parties expressed support on Sunday for congressional reviews of U.S. military attacks against vessels allegedly trafficking drugs in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific, referring to a report indicating that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth verbally ordered that all crew members be killed as part of a bombing on September 2.

Lawmakers said they didn't know if the report published by the Washington Post last week was true, even some Republicans were skeptical, but they expressed that going after the survivors of an initial missile attack raises serious legal concerns.

"If true, this reaches the level of a war crime," said Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.

When asked about a tracking attack against people who could not defend themselves, Republican Representative Mike Turner said that Congress has no information that this has occurred. He assured that the leaders of the Armed Services Committee in both the House and the Senate have opened investigations.

"Obviously, if that happened, it would be very serious and I agree that it would be an illegal act," commented Turner.
