Jakarta.- Indonesian rescue teams resumed the search operation on Sunday for a Spaniard and three of his children, who have been missing since Friday after the sinking of a boat in the waters of Padar Island, east of Bali. "The operation resumed at 6:30 local time (22.30 GMT, Saturday)," Fathur Rahman, director of the rescue team in the Maumere region, in charge of the mission, told EFE. The tourist boat, called KM Putri Sakinah, sank in the waters of Padar around 20:30 on Friday (13:30 GMT), after which a search was activated with boats and diving equipment.

The Third Day of Searching for Spanish in Indonesia

During this third day, the search will focus on "determining the position of the ship's hull" as, according to the testimony of the ship's captain, the four missing persons were last seen in their cabin. "We have prepared divers, but we must ascertain the location of the ship's remains," remarked Fathur, after search teams found some wreckage from the vessel floating yesterday.

The four missing people are Fernando Martín Carreras, a former footballer and coach of the Valencia CF women's B team, and three of his children - two boys and a girl -, according to data provided to EFE by the Indonesian emergency service SAR. With them, the mother, Andrea Ortuño, and another of the daughters, were traveling in the wrecked boat, who were rescued along with four crew members and a tour guide.

The mission's obstacles

The mission is being affected by the strong underwater currents and the bad weather battering the region, rescuers point out today. According to the preliminary report of the incident, the boat's engine suffered a breakdown that caused the shipwreck.

The missing persons are from Valencia, in eastern Spain, and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already in contact with their relatives. Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor infrastructure, overloading of passengers and goods, lax enforcement of safety regulations, and inclement weather. The ship is one of the main means of transport in the Indonesian archipelago, made up of more than 17,000 islands and with a population of more than 270 million inhabitants.
