Mexico. – The Federal Government reported that Mexico has begun performing pancreas transplants, a key procedure for patients with serious conditions such as advanced-stage diabetes, as part of the advances in health registered during 2025. During the morning conference on December 30, 2025, the head of the Ministry of Health, David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz, presented a national balance on organ transplants performed in the country, highlighting that these procedures require highly specialized medical teams and adequate hospital infrastructure.

Advances in kidney transplants

In the last five years, Mexico has performed 14,347 kidney transplants, of which more than 10,000 came from living donors and 4,243 from deceased donors. In 2025 alone, 2,783 procedures were recorded, with 76% performed in public hospitals. The authorities emphasized that the continued availability of immunosuppressant drugs has made it possible to achieve a survival rate of 93.5% in living donor transplants and 84.2% in cases from deceased donors.

Liver transplants with international standards

So far this year, 245 liver transplants have been performed, of which 187 were carried out in public hospitals. The five-year survival rate is 71.5%, a figure that meets international standards.

The Ministry of Health recalled that this procedure can also be performed with a living donor, which allows both the donor and the recipient to achieve a satisfactory recovery and resume a normal life in a few months.

Heart and Lung Transplants

During 2025, 46 heart transplants have been carried out, including four combined heart and kidney transplants. Except for one case, all were performed in public hospitals. The reported survival rate is 62.9% at four years, and it was highlighted that many patients have managed to return to their daily activities. Pediatric transplants without hospital mortality were also reported. Regarding lung transplants, 10 procedures have been performed in 2025, reaching a historical cumulative total of 48 transplants. Authorities emphasized that, beyond the figures, these procedures represent a significant improvement in the quality and life expectancy of patients.

Boosting Organ Donation

The Secretary of Health highlighted that a single donor can save up to eight lives, thanks to the donation of organs such as kidneys, lungs, liver, and pancreas, which reinforces the need to strengthen the culture of donation in the country. Interested individuals can register as voluntary donors through the National Transplant Center, at the phone number 55 54 87 99 02, in addition to communicating their decision to family members. The Federal Government promotes campaigns under the messages "Donating is transcending" and "For a Mexico without a waiting list", accompanied by legislative advances that seek to facilitate organ donation throughout the national territory.
