Washington,.- The president of the United States, Donald Trump, once again threatened an attack on Iran if the Islamic Republic does not agree to close a nuclear deal that prevents it from developing atomic weapons. The Republican made these statements at his private residence in Mar-a-Lago (Florida) when questioned by the press about the words of the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Jamenei, who warned that a US attack would trigger a regional war.

"We have the biggest and most powerful ships in the world there, very close, in a couple of days, and hopefully we will reach an agreement. If we don't reach an agreement, then we will find out if he was right or not", Trump declared.

The United States and Iran held negotiations last year for an agreement, but they broke down when Trump ordered the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities in June. The tension between both countries rose again in January due to the Iranian government's repression of the protests that broke out in several parts of the country, where thousands of protesters have died, according to human rights groups. Trump urged protesters weeks ago to continue the protests and assured that American aid was "on its way". The United States has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three guided-missile destroyers, accompanied by thousands of additional soldiers, near Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf.
