The Washington Post announced the departure of its chief executive Will Lewis

The decision was made after the layoffs reported by the newspaper days ago. The Brit will be replaced by Jeff D’Onofrio, until now Chief Financial Officer.
United States.- The Washington Post announced the immediate departure of its CEO, Will Lewis, days after the layoffs that occurred in the capital newspaper. According to the newspaper itself, Jeff D’Onofrio, until now chief financial officer, was appointed as Lewis's successor. These decisions are in response to the decline in subscribers and the decrease in revenue in the company. Furthermore, they had already gone through several stages of cost-cutting in recent years, just like other American newspapers. Will Lewis announced his departure via an email addressed to the staff. In the message, he explained that he felt it was the right time to leave the position "with immediate effect". For his part, Matt Murray, executive editor, communicated via video conference to employees that the cuts would be "significant" and specified in an internal message that the measures involve significant reductions in the editorial staff and affect almost all news departments. The restructuring plan includes the closure of the Sports section, the relocation of part of the journalistic team to the reporting section, the elimination of book coverage, and the reduction of foreign correspondents and special envoys.

In turn, the new editorial orientation will prioritize coverage of politics, national security, business, science, health, technology, climate, and investigative journalism. The company explained that the goal is to reposition itself in strategic areas to regain financial balance and strengthen its journalistic influence. Matt Murray detailed that The Washington Post recorded financial losses over a prolonged period and failed to meet the expectations of its readership. On the other hand, he reported that the internet search traffic of the newspaper was reduced to almost half in the last three years. In addition, he indicated that in the last five years the number of articles published daily decreased, which impacted the reach and digital visibility of the publication. As part of the restructuring, the newspaper will reduce the number of journalists assigned abroad, redefining priorities in news coverage. The reorganization also involves changes in the distribution of tasks within the editorial team and the reassignment of journalists to new thematic areas. The measures adopted seek to ensure the continuity and impact of the newspaper in an environment of accelerated changes in the media industry.
