More than 40 million people are facing a new major snowstorm this Monday in the northeastern United States, where the governors of eight states declared a state of emergency. "According to current forecasts, the worst is over", announced the mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, at a press conference on Monday afternoon.

Between 40 and 50 cm of snow had fallen on most of the city and an additional four to seven (cm) were expected until 20:00 local time (01:00 GMT), he indicated. The Providence airport in Rhode Island recorded a record 83 cm of snow and it was not ruled out that the accumulated amounts would reach 90 cm throughout the afternoon. In New York, the circulation of non-essential vehicles was again authorized from noon on Monday, but travel was still considered dangerous. By the afternoon, more than 6,000 flights originating from or destined for the United States had been canceled and hundreds more were delayed, according to the FlightAware tracking website. In addition, another 2,000 flights were canceled for Tuesday. The governors of eight states (Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island) therefore declared a state of emergency. – «I'm fed up» – The second major winter storm to hit the East Coast in less than a month caused frustration among some citizens. "I'm fed up. I don't want to see another snowflake," said Vincent Greer, a resident of Wildwood, New Jersey, as he shoveled the accumulated snow in front of his building. For others, however, the snowfall seemed "beautiful." "So much snow, it's simply gorgeous," Chris Crowell, 45, told AFP at Grand Central Station in New York. The national weather service had also warned of a risk of flooding in certain areas of the state of New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Some 570,000 homes were without electricity shortly before 20:00 GMT, 285,000 of them in Massachusetts alone. – «Plan ahead – Throughout the region, schools, municipal services, businesses, and even the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan remained closed during the day. In other places, public transport, including rail traffic, was disrupted on Monday. Even in New Jersey it was completely suspended. Michelle Wu, mayor of Boston, in the state of Massachusetts, ordered on Monday the closure of public schools and municipal buildings.  «We ask everyone to plan ahead, stay safe and warm, and stay off the roads», said Wu. Major cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Boston announced the opening of dedicated heating centers for people who would be trapped on the street by the cold. This storm arrives shortly after the east of the country returned to normal after the devastating passage of another cold front that caused more than 100 deaths.  "We have no record of any deaths related to this snowstorm on the streets of our city or in public places," the mayor of New York assured on Monday.
