Government conducts damage assessment due to rains in agriculture in the East

The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, carried out actions in Higüey and other areas of the East of the country, where the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliverio Espaillat, made an extensive tour and held a meeting with provincial authorities, producers and representatives of the livestock sector, with the aim of assessing the damage caused by the recent rains and coordinating immediate actions in support of the affected communities.

During the meeting, Minister Espaillat highlighted that the government's priority is to hear firsthand the needs of the producers, conduct field surveys, and provide timely responses to the identified problems.

"The goal is to see the producers, listen to their needs, tour the fields and solve any problems that arise," he expressed.

In that context, he recalled that the "Abriendo Caminos" program was recently relaunched, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), with the purpose of improving road access in rural communities to facilitate producers' transportation of different items.

In that sense, he announced that operational teams will be left in the area to expedite the rehabilitation of local roads and facilitate the mobility of producers.

Likewise, he valued the initial contribution of RD$1,000 million provided by President Luis Abinader for the intervention of rural roads nationwide, as well as the ongoing bidding process for the acquisition of spare parts and tires for the heavy machinery operating in different regions of the country.

Upon concluding the meeting, the minister toured the most affected areas, reiterating the government's commitment to continue supporting producers and ensuring effective solutions that allow the continuity of agricultural and livestock activities.

The places visited were: Baigua, San Rafael del Yuma, Laguna de Nisibón, in La Altagracia, and Jagual batey, in San Pedro de Macorís.

The day included Daysi de Óleo, civil governor of La Altagracia; Fausto Tejada, regional director of Agriculture; Wilfredo Martínez, legal consultant of the Ministry of Public Works; Pedro Castillo, president of the Association of Cattlemen (AGANI); and Enrique Pimentel, director of Livestock, among other representatives of the sector.
