The current world number two made the decision after not recovering from the discomfort that forced him to withdraw recently from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, held in the Ciudad Condal. This will be the second consecutive occasion in which the Murcian player is absent from the Madrid tournament. Through his social media, Alcaraz expressed his regret at not being able to compete in one of the most special events on his calendar. "Madrid is home and it hurts me a lot not to be able to play here, especially for my people," said the player. The Spanish player's withdrawal adds to that of Serbian Novak Djokovic, who also announced his retirement from the tournament due to physical problems, representing a significant blow to the main draw of the event. Alcaraz had raised the alarms after requiring medical assistance during his debut against the Finnish Otto Virtanen in Barcelona, where it was initially thought to be a minor ailment. However, the player himself later admitted that the injury was "more serious than expected". The Mutua Madrid Open will be held from April 20 to May 3 at the Caja Mágica, with the expected participation of the main figures of the circuit. Confirmation is still awaited regarding the presence of the world number one, Jannik Sinner, who could choose to manage his calendar for upcoming events such as the Rome Masters and Roland Garros. The tournament has Norwegian Casper Ruud and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka as defending champions.
