With a fake Guatemalan passport, this is how the operation in Argentina went down where Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna fell.

After months of information exchange between institutions from at least three countries, the rear admiral of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), Fernando Farías Laguna, was detained in Argentina. The arrest was made on April 23, months after the man did not attend an arraignment in Mexico. As he had an Interpol red notice, he was wanted in 192 countries.

From Mexico to Florida and then to Argentina

Before being located in the South American country, in August 2024, a trip to Florida, United States, was made and there were no records of him returning to national territory.

However, Fernando Farías was arrested in Argentina on April 23, the seizure was confirmed by Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). That is why the capture was the result of the coordination of security forces from Mexico, Argentina and the US.

Argentina's Minister of National Security, Alejandra Monteoliva, reports on the Semar element detained in Buenos Aires

"It was required by Mexican authorities after being identified as the leader of an organization dedicated to the smuggling of hydrocarbons. He was arrested for extradition purposes and was in possession of false documentation," the official highlighted.

The information shared by the authorities indicates that she was carrying false documents; intelligence reports detail that it was a forged passport from Guatemala.

The material shared by the authorities shows the man being guarded by elements of the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) and Interpol Argentina. Journalistic reports indicate that the man's arrest was carried out between Guatemala and Juan B. Justo streets, in the Palermo neighborhood.

He was also in Colombia

The Minister of National Security of Argentina, Alejandra Monteoliva, highlighted in a video that the captured subject was a key piece in a criminal structure dedicated to trafficking fuel from US territory to Mexico by passing the substance off as oils and additives. The law firm pointed out the current situation through a statement. Credit: Special "He was coming from Colombia with a fake Guatemalan passport. His name is Fernando Farías Laguna, vice admiral of the Mexican Navy, wanted by the CIA and with an Interpol red notice," he expressed. He added that Fernando Frías is accused of organized crime, corruption, fuel theft, and attempted homicide of Mexican officials.

There is no official notification, lawyers allege

Following the announcement of the arrest, the Epigmenio Mendieta law firm asserts that, although federal authorities reported the arrest, there has been no formal notification to family members regarding the subject's arrest. "Neither the defense nor the family has been officially notified by any authority, nor has there been any communication with our client." For its part, the Navy highlighted the capture through its social networks and stated: "In the Navy, the law is for everyone."
