An Indian businessman proposed an alternative to the Colombian Government regarding the decision to sacrifice some of the hippos living in the country. The proposal consists of moving 80 of these animals to a conservation center located in the state of Gujarat, in the west of Indian territory.

The initiative was presented by Anant Ambani, a member of a family with high economic power in Asia and a director of a business group. In a recently released statement, he explained his position on the situation of these animals in Colombia.

"These eighty hippos didn't choose where they were born, nor did they create the circumstances they now face. They are living and sentient beings, and if we have the possibility of saving them through a safe and humane solution, we have the responsibility to try," he said.

The plan involves taking the specimens to the wildlife rescue center called Vantara, which already houses animals such as elephants, primates, and big cats. According to the information provided, this place has facilities to receive species that have been rescued or transferred from other countries.

The Indian businessman proposed to move 80 hippos to a conservation center in Gujarat as an alternative to sacrifice- credit. The problem of hippos in Colombia is not recent. Currently, it is estimated that there are about 200 animals living in the wild, mainly in areas near the Magdalena River. Their presence originated in the 1980s, when four specimens were brought to the country by drug trafficker Pablo Escobar. Over the years, the population increased without control.

In mid-April, the Ministry of Environment announced that euthanasia will be applied to 80 hippos. This decision seeks to reduce the growth rate of the species. According to estimates from the same entity, if measures are not taken, the number of these animals could reach one thousand by the year 2035.

The Government has explained that it evaluated several options before making this determination. Among them, the relocation of the animals and sterilization were analyzed. However, it was concluded that these alternatives present practical difficulties. Some involve high costs and complex operations, while others have not achieved sufficient results to stop reproduction. The Colombian Government authorized the euthanasia of 80 hippos to stop their growth, which could reach a thousand animals by 2035. - credit Humboldt Institute Error en el proceso de traducción In the same statement, Ambani added: “Compassion and public safety are not opposing forces. With sound science and careful planning, it is possible to protect riparian communities, preserve ecosystems, and save animal life. Vantara has the expertise, infrastructure, and determination needed to support this effort, on the terms that Colombia requires”. The growth of this population also raises concerns about its effects on the environment. A 2022 report by the Humboldt Institute warns that hippos affect aquatic ecosystems. Among the points noted is the impact on native species, such as the manatee, which may be harmed by the presence of these animals. According to a 2022 report by the Humboldt Institute, these animals affect aquatic ecosystems and pose a risk to nearby communities - archive credit Colprensa In addition to the environmental effect, the risk to people living in nearby areas has been mentioned. Hippos are territorial animals and can react aggressively, posing a danger to riverside communities that share space with them. The discussion about what to do with these animals remains open. On the one hand, there is the need to control their growth to avoid damage to the ecosystem and reduce risks to the population. On the other hand, proposals appear that seek to avoid the death of the specimens by moving them to other places. While a decision is made, the hippopotamus population continues to grow and the issue continues to generate debate in the country.
