Mexico City.- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized this Sunday, during the presentation of a national report on her two years of victory at the polls, that Mexico does not "accept interference" and questioned the "legitimate interest" of the United States in really helping the country, for which she called on the population to defend the homeland. «Who decides in Mexico: foreign agencies or the people? Who decides in Mexico: the big economic interests or the people? We are going to defend the sovereignty and independence of Mexico, we are going to defend the transformation», the president stated during a massive event at the Monument to the Revolution, in Mexico City, which was attended by thousands of supporters and politicians. In her speech, broadcast in 31 entities of the country, the head of the Executive invited Mexican society to "hold informative assemblies, distribute flyers and newspapers" to "inform the people that the homeland is not for sale, the homeland is loved and defended" and that in "Mexico we, the Mexicans, decide".

Criticisms of the United States

In addition to focusing her message on the results accumulated in 20 months of government, Sheinbaum criticized the recent and growing pressure from the United States on Mexico in extradition and organized crime matters, as occurred with the accusation of the northern neighbor towards 10 Mexican officials, including the governor of the state of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya. «Is it really a legitimate, genuine interest in helping Mexico? Is it really a legitimate interest in combating organized crime, or are we perhaps seeing how sectors of the far-right are using our country to position themselves for their 2026 elections?», he questioned. "They are not rhetorical questions: Mexico is nobody's piñata," he stated after attacking a possible U.S. intervention in the federal elections to be held in Mexico in 2027, where legislative and executive positions will be elected. He also assured that since April 19, when the death of two U.S. agents, "without official accreditation," in the Mexican state of Chihuahua was made public, an "offensive" campaign on social media by the international right wing towards his government "intensified."

Accountability

As part of this accountability exercise, which she issued without being constitutionally obligated, Sheinbaum maintained a message of continuity regarding the projects of her predecessor and founder of the ruling party National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). "Nearly 36 million Mexicans placed their hope, their trust, and their decision to continue advancing on the path of transformation initiated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the ballot boxes," said the governor. Part of his speech focused on highlighting the achievements in economic, energy, social, health and security matters, although he paid special attention to the economic results. He highlighted that, despite "the difficult international circumstances marked by a change in the tariff policy of the United States government and the war in Iran," the Mexican economy "remains stable and advancing."

The Mexican Economy

Sheinbaum also highlighted the record in foreign direct investment that the country reached during the first quarter of the year, with 23.591 billion dollars, 10.4% more than in 2025. He also pointed to the creation of 669,000 jobs as an achievement, the "highest number of formal employment in the history of Mexico," as well as the fact that the Mexican peso "is the second currency that has appreciated the most against the US dollar" globally.

The ruler's message lands at a rough stage for the ruling party, which recently renewed its leadership and is undergoing internal adjustments in preparation for the 2027 federal elections. Sheinbaum, the first female president in the history of Mexico, came to power with 35.92 million votes, a figure that established her as the candidate with the highest number of votes cast in the recent history of the country, with 59.7%, surpassing her predecessor López Obrador by more than six points, who obtained 53.1% of the votes in the 2018 elections.
