Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader emphasized that the modifications to the Labor Code, the Penal Code and the reform to the law of Purchases and Contracting must be approved by the legislators during the present legislature, which concludes on July 26th. The reform to the Labor Code was approved in its first reading by the Senate last week, but the business sector expressed its rejection through a statement, calling it a setback. According to the business owners, the proposal ignores important agreements reached after years of tripartite dialogue and lacks the principles of balance and sustainability that the country needs. Therefore, they urged to resume the dialogue between the government, the business sector, and the unions.

Regarding the new Penal Code, it is expected to be approved in a second reading by the senators this Tuesday. However, some lawmakers have announced that they will present several modifications, such as the senator for the National District, Omar Fernández, who anticipated that he will propose changes to article 393, which refers to "attacks on the fundamental interests of the nation". The version approved in the first reading does not include the decriminalization of abortion in three exceptional cases and establishes the figure of the accumulation of sentences, which allows cumulative sentences of up to 60 years in prison for multiple charges. Both projects must receive the second reading in the Senate before moving to the Chamber of Deputies, where they will repeat the same legislative process.
