Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic is increasingly moving towards becoming a more digital, inclusive, and secure country thanks to a series of policies focused on reducing the digital divide, connectivity, security, technological sovereignty, and strategic alliances.
These five strategic pillars, which will combat social inequity, are implemented by the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), affirmed this Monday President Luis Abinader in his meeting on Mondays.

Regarding the reduction of the digital divide, it includes bringing digital terrestrial television to all homes, which will bring better image and sound, more free channels, will free up radio spectrum, and will promote a more informed society.
The implementation of 940,000 converter boxes will be completed in three phases, of which 607,989 have already been delivered in two phases for the east and north regions. In the third phase, the remaining 332,012 converter boxes will be delivered.
Regarding the connectivity of institutions serving the common good, there is a pilot project in pediatric telemedicine to offer specialized medical consultations to children in rural communities, leveraging the infrastructure deployed in previous Indotel projects, starting in Dajabón, Elías Piña, San Juan, Independencia, Barahona and San Cristóbal.
Regarding security in telecommunications, work is being done to block internet signals in penitentiary centers to curb criminal communications from prisons, combining technological investment, inter-institutional cooperation, and budgetary control in an agreement with the Public Ministry.
In La Semanal, the technological territorial sovereignty of the radioelectric spectrum on the border was also discussed.
The Indotel maintains continuous surveillance through stations located in Barahona, San Juan, and Dajabón, in order to detect unauthorized emissions, both of national origin and from Haiti.
Indotel is working, together with the Public Ministry, to strengthen security in the national penitentiary system through the use of specialized technology in the control of telecommunications signals.
This seeks to reduce illicit communications from detention centers, strengthen the technological capabilities of the prison system, guarantee greater institutional and operational control, prevent crimes that may originate from within prison facilities, and optimize inter-institutional coordination between the Public Ministry and Indotel.
