Seattle, USA – The Seattle Mariners bolstered their offense by reacquiring Venezuelan third baseman Eugenio Suárez in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, sources told MLB.com. The deal has not yet been officially confirmed by the clubs.

The deal involves sending three prospects to Arizona: first baseman Tyler Locklear (ninth in Seattle's ranking), right-handed pitcher Hunter Cranton (16th) and also Dominican right-hander Juan Burgos (17th).Return of a Power Bat
Suárez, 33, played with the Mariners between 2022 and 2023 before being traded to Arizona. This season he has exploded offensively with 36 home runs, establishing himself as one of the most productive hitters in the Major Leagues. In addition, he has been recognized with four Player of the Week awards from the National League and earned his second All-Star selection. On April 26th of this year, he made history by becoming the 19th player to hit four home runs in a single game, a feat he achieved against the Atlanta Braves.Ascent After a Fall
Suarez's transformation has been remarkable. In mid-2024, his future was uncertain: he was batting just .193 and the Diamondbacks were considering designating him for assignment. However, since June 26th of last year, his performance rebounded drastically with an offensive line of .311/.359/.607, almost leading Arizona to the postseason and justifying the club's decision to exercise its US$17 million option for the 2025 season.Although his defensive metrics have decreased this year (-6 outs above average), his previous numbers (+11 in 2023 and +3 in 2024) support his value as a regular third baseman.
Market Context
This move comes amid an active Trade Deadline, where several teams have opted to aggressively reinforce themselves. The Diamondbacks also recently sent Josh Naylor to Seattle and Randal Grichuk to Kansas City, while the Orioles have moved several bullpen pieces. Seattle, currently in a postseason position, thus strengthens its lineup for the end of the season, while Arizona bets on young talent to continue its renewal process.Change Details:
