McGonigle, baseball prospect number 2, didn't take long to make an impact. In his first at-bat, with the bases loaded, he hit a two-run double against Nick Pivetta that helped the Tigers manufacture a four-run rally in the first inning, taking early control of the game. Two innings later, he responded again with another double off the right field wall, initiating another offensive attack by Detroit. With that hit, he became the first Tigers player with multiple extra-base hits in his Major League debut during an Opening Day. The 21-year-old also showed his speed by connecting a ground ball inside the infield and reaching first base safely, and then scoring thanks to a two-run home run by Dillon Dingler that extended the lead to 8-0. McGonigle sealed his historic day in the ninth inning with a single, joining Billy Bean as the only players in Detroit history with four hits in their Major League debut. In MLB history, only 25 players have achieved this feat, including Hall of Fame members like Willie McCovey, Kirby Puckett, and Willie Keeler. Detroit's baseball operations manager, Scott Harris, had made it clear before the game that the team didn't need the rookie to carry the franchise, but rather to contribute to the club's solid roster, something McGonigle did immediately in his first game. The offense backed up starter Tarik Skubal, and the Tigers started the season with a resounding victory, but the story of the day was the impressive debut of Kevin McGonigle, who demonstrated discipline, power, and speed, confirming why he is considered one of the best prospects in baseball.
