The decisive blow came immediately. Brett Baty hit a bases-clearing triple that set the tone for the game and prematurely removed Paul Skenes from the mound, who signed the shortest start of his career by recording just two outs and throwing 37 pitches. The New York offense also took advantage of defensive errors, including consecutive mistakes by outfielder Oneil Cruz, which facilitated a five-run rally in that first inning. In his debut with the team, Dominican right-hander Freddy Peralta (1-0) responded with a solid performance, pitching five innings in which he struck out seven batters without giving up any walks, to earn the victory. The Mets' lineup, revamped for this season, maintained the pressure throughout the game. Carson Benge shined in his first Major League game with a home run, while Francisco Álvarez also went for the street. Both punished the relief in the sixth inning to extend the lead. Also, Francisco Lindor negotiated three walks and scored each time, and Luis Robert Jr. contributed two RBIs in his debut with the team. For the Pirates, Brandon Lowe hit two home runs and Ryan O'Hearn added another, but it wasn't enough to counteract the pitching's lack of control, which conceded nine walks in total. The New York bullpen also responded, with three solid innings from Tobias Myers, who allowed just one run to secure the victory. With this result, the Mets continue to show their strength in opening days, improving their historical record in this type of commitment before a packed stadium.
