Madrid (EFE).- The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to extend worldwide the six-match ban imposed by UEFA on Benfica's Argentinian player Gianluca Prestianni, for discriminatory conduct during the match his team played against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

UEFA sanctioned Prestianni at the end of April, after on February 17th, during the first leg of the competition's round of 32, he covered his mouth with his hand and addressed Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior, who reported to the referee that the Argentinian had called him a "monkey".
FIFA confirmed this Wednesday that the extension of the sanction, as requested by UEFA, has been made in accordance with Article 70 of its Disciplinary Code.
Of the six matches imposed, Prestianni has already served one, in the second leg of the aforementioned tie in the 'Champions' against Real Madrid played at the Santiago Bernabéu, on February 25, and three of the matches are suspended for a probationary period of two years, according to the decision adopted by UEFA.
Therefore, the extension of the sanction by FIFA worldwide would affect Argentina's first two matches in the next World Cup if Prestianni is called up by Lionel Scaloni, which the current champion will play on Tuesday, June 16 in Kansas against Algeria and on Monday 22 against Austria in Dallas.
Covering the mouth will be penalized from the next World Cup
On April 24th, UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Committee sanctioned Prestianni with six matches for "discriminatory conduct (i.e., homophobic)" due to his incident with Vinicius, in which he covered his mouth to address the Brazilian forward, who reported to the match referee, François Letexier, that the Benfica player had called him a "monkey."
The referee activated the protocol for these cases and the match was stopped for about ten minutes.
Letexier's decision followed UEFA regulations as neither he nor any member of the refereeing team had heard the alleged insult. Had they done so, the offender should have seen the red card, according to the rules of the (IFAB) International Football Board (rule 12).
Finally, the match was able to resume, although in a strained manner, and concluded with a victory for Álvaro Arbeloa's team by 0-1.
Prestianni then denied having racially insulted Vinícius and weeks later, in an interview with Telefe, confirmed that he had called him a "faggot." "For Argentinians it's a normal insult. They call me a racist when I never was nor will be. For us Argentinians it's a normal insult to say 'coward' or 'faggot'," he said.
UEFA, which provisionally suspended Prestianni after the events for the second leg against Real Madrid, carried out an investigation that concluded with a six-match ban, three of which are suspended for a probationary period of two years.
The incident subsequently led, on April 28th, to a unanimous decision by IFAB, responsible for the rules of the game, to sanction with a red card players who cover their mouths "to hide discriminatory behavior", starting from this year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
"At the discretion of the competition organizer, any player who covers their mouth in a situation of confrontation with an opponent may be sanctioned with a red card," explained IFAB.
