The former world number four made the announcement through a statement, in which he assured he felt proud of his career. "I have given everything I had. I am happy for the path traveled and I will enjoy every match I have left," he expressed. Nishikori, 36, acknowledged that constant physical discomfort affected his performance and prevented him from competing at the desired level, although he emphasized that his passion for tennis always motivated him to move forward. Throughout his career, the Japanese player left a historical mark by becoming the first Japanese player to play in a Grand Slam final, an achievement he reached at the 2014 US Open. In addition, he reached fourth place in the world ranking in 2015 and won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
