  • 1416: the Catholic Church burns Jan Hus alive for defending the religious reformer Jan Hus.
  • 1431: in Rouen (France), the English burn the young French saint Joan of Arc alive on charges of heresy.
  • 1498: from Spain, Christopher Columbus and his sailors begin their third voyage to the American continent.
  • 1837: in Valparaíso (Chile), the priest Juan Crisóstomo Liausú founds the Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones de Valparaíso, currently the oldest private educational establishment in Latin America.
  • 1879: the City's Gilmores Garden in New York is renamed Madison Square Garden by the millionaire William Vanderbilt and is opened to the public on 26th Street and Madison Avenue.
